Table View Beachfront upgrades gaining good momentum

The City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews visited the Table View Beachfront this week. While the project construction work is currently pushing full steam ahead, the beachfront is already showing off some of its newly upgraded elements. The project is expected to be completed by November 2026 with most of the civil related construction that causes the largest disruption anticipated to conclude in the first half of next year. ‘It’s been nearly four months since the Table View beachfront upgrade construction works resumed and I am so happy to see the momentum the project has gained since then. Despite the harsh winter weather conditions, this team has been working hard to get this project back on track. During my visit this week, I could already see the new wide walkway along the beachfront and the new parking area at Visagie Street taking shape. The aim of this project is to rehabilitate and revitalise this beachfront, one of the city’s prime tourist attractions along the Atlantic coastline. By enhancing the usability and facilities along this stretch, we believe it will attract more visitors and investors which will ultimately benefit the local businesses in the area and tourism overall,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

The project balances natural coastal defence; recreational space; infrastructure improvements; beach access and parking needs.

The stabilised dunes serve as a natural barrier against wave action, preventing sand from blowing inland, and the new walkway and reconfigured parking bays improve beach access while maintaining parking availability.

To compensate for parking spaces lost to the walkway, parking capacity is being expanded at Bokkombaai, a new parking area which is being built at Visagie Street, and additional bays are planned along Beach Road. These new parking areas will also offer elevated views of the beach and Table Mountain, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery from their vehicles.

   
Upon completion, residents and visitors will enjoy an overall enhancement of the area’s natural assets, public amenities and coastal infrastructure.

The current works under way include the following:

• Walkway and modifications to Parking Pods between Foam Road and Seal Road
• Construction of the Visagie Street parking area
• Widening of the walkway around Marine Circle
• Expansion of the Bokkombaai parking area
• Various supplementary works, including timber fencing, access ways, and stormwater outlets

‘We again want to thank the local residents; businesses in the surrounding area and visitors for their patience and support. We are definitely making the desired progress with these reliable contractors in place. Four months in and we remain on schedule with clear timelines established. Your continued understanding is valued as we work to deliver a revitalised space that will benefit the entire community,’ said Alderman Andrews.

The City’s Coastal Management branch is still monitoring and managing the dunes along the coastline very carefully to ensure they remain effectively stabilised. This includes ongoing efforts to maintain wind nets and vegetation until it is in a balanced state. The re-profiled dunes offer multiple environmental benefits that are visible today namely the reduction in sand accumulation on nearby infrastructure, including the parking areas, walkways, roadways and buildings along the Table View beachfront.

The public is reminded to keep dogs on a lead; to adhere to the signage on site and to only access the beach via designated access pathways.
